Ètudes/Studies is a beautiful exhibition that looks at the working process of these two figure based artists. In this exhibition, the works are their individual responses to the same figure model. Karen Fletcher creates dynamic, expressive works in clay. Isabella Stefanescu's drawings are energetic and intuitive, capturing a pose through well-placed lines. The exhibition gives viewers the opportunity to see how an artist's approach evolves and varies, allowing one to see the similarities and differences in each artist's response to the same subject. Ètudes/Studies offers a unique opportunity to view the artistic process that precedes each finished work of art. Etudes/Studies will include a selection of full size finished work by each artist.
The study of human form is central to Karen Fletcher's practice. She began modeling with clay as an alternative to drawing in live studio situations. Modeling from a figure improved her understanding of form and has served her particularly well when used as a means of study in conjunction with drawing. The pieces in this exhibition are a record of process, executed working directly from the model.
Fletcher’s work is included in several public collections and has been exhibited throughout Ontario. She received a BA from the University of Waterloo and BE from the University of Western Ontario, London. She has lectured and instructed in the visual arts with University and Secondary School Art Departments.
Isabella Stefanescu is concerned with rendering space and bodies which for her, is central to meaning, value and intention. The subject of her paintings and drawings move from landscape to the figure, both reflecting a similar meditative mood.
Stefanescu graduated from the University of Waterloo. She has exhibited her work throughout Southern Ontario in both private and public galleries. Isabella was just awarded the 2007 Ontario Arts Council K.M. Hunter Prize for interdisciplinary art.
